The Invasive Species in Kleinstuck

Major Concerns 

Winged Wahoo or Burning Bush: Shrub 3-6' in woodland, "wings" of bark on branches.

  • Problem: Shades out native wildflowers
  • Solution: Pull out small shrubs. Cut brush and treat stumps with 20% active ingredient such as "Round-up" type herbicide. July - March ideal.

Garlic Mustard: White blooming flower in woodland, usually 6-24''.  

  • Problem: Shades out native wildflowers and alters soil chemistry.
  • Solution: Pull out by hand, March - May, spray 1-2% active ingredient such as "Round-up" type herbicide. November - early March

Asian Bittersweet: Orange seed pod with red berry on vines which are up to 6'' in diameter.

  • Problem: Smothers and chokes trees and surrounding area.
  • Solution: Cut shrubs and treat stumps with "brush killer" type herbicide (triclopr and/or 2,4D) July - March.

Glossy Buckthorn: Round glossy leaves and dark black berries in wetland 3 – 10’.

  • Problem: Shades out native plants, dries out wetland, changes wetland chemistry
  • Solution: Cut and treat stumps with 20% a.i. “Round-up” type herbicide July – March – USE WETLAND APPROVED VERSION (i.e. Aquastar, Rodeo, Accord)

Purple Loosestrife: Purple flowers in wetland 3 – 6’.

  • Problem: Crowds out native plants, dries out wetland, changes wetland chemistry
  • Solution: Introduce biocontrol: Gallerucella beetles
